In Commander, players often surprise each other with cards and creative combos dating back to the earliest days of MTG, including special cards from Secret Lair drops and decks based on out-of-universe IPs, like the Universes Beyond Warhammer 40,000 crossover set or the upcoming LotR crossover set Tales of Middle-earth. This means players can use all the cards in their collection without having to worry about whether they are Standard-legal. Commander has an enormous pool of cards for players to choose from, with almost every MTG card ever released being legal in Commander, except a few on the banned list like Black Lotus. With 100 unique cards, players have a lot of freedom for creativity in their decks, and there are lots of fun combos that can be played in Commander that just wouldn't be possible within the confines of other formats. This sometimes encourages impressive combos that see commanders buffed with auras, equipment and spells to take out unsuspecting players in one turn. Commander also features an alternate win condition, as players dealt 21 or more damage by another player's commander instantly lose the game.
The depth and diversity of deck-building is what really sets Commander apart from MTG's other formats, with the only other limit being that players can only use cards matching their commander's colors. In Commander, everyone has a starting life total of 40 rather than the usual 20, which ensures the games are slower and favors mid-range and control-style gameplay over aggro. It can be played again after being exiled or sent to the graveyard for 2 additional mana each time. Players build decks with 100 unique cards in addition to choosing a legendary creature to be their commander, which remains outside the deck and can be played at any time for its mana cost. The usual way to play is a four-player free-for-all. Unlike traditional formats like Standard and Legacy, more than two players can play Commander.
